The Whirly-Girls: Propelling Women Pilots
An important part of this ongoing journey of normalization and empowerment of women in aviation includes the supportive networks that advocate for and facilitate the growth of women in this sector. Leading Edge Flight Academy proudly supports the Whirly-Girls, a revered association committed to advancing women helicopter pilots. A substantial portion, if not all, of our female helicopter pilots are members. The Whirly-Girls provide scholarships, mentorship, and a community for women to thrive in aviation. This relationship highlights women’s struggles and embodies the proactive steps to overcome them.
Challenges Remain Amid the Ascendancy
While we celebrate the rise of women in flight, it’s critical to acknowledge that challenges persist. Women still make up a small percentage of the professional pilot community. In fact, According to a report by the Women in Aviation Advisory Board in 2022, female captains constitute a mere 3.6% of the total. The journey towards gender equality is ongoing and requires persistent efforts from institutions and individuals. Awareness, education, and advocacy are fundamental in this struggle. Schools like LEFA play a crucial role by fostering an inclusive environment that welcomes, supports, and actively promotes women’s participation.
